Course structure

As per Yoga Alliance guidelines

The program offers a strong foundation in traditional Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga and Vinyasa Flow Yoga, concentrating on the correct alignments of the postures. While your course you practice traditional Hatha Yoga in the morning time and take part at Ashtanga Led Classes in the afternoon. Your teacher will guide you through the full Primary Series with modifications. While your practice your teacher will constantly check your alignments, help you to deepen the postures and, if appropriate, adjust you in the postures.
The course syllabus follows Yoga Alliance standards. It includes learning the asanas of the Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series with an emphasis on how to teach in an injury free way to all age groups. This course will also have elements of therapeutic yoga as devised by Yoga Acharya BKS Iyengar.
  • Pranayama (breathing techniques) : First of all, from first day of class, breathing techniques are introduced. In traditional Hatha Yoga as well as in other Yoga styles you will study that, breath initiates the movements from posture to posture. It is impossible to progress through the Ashtanga primary series without familiarity of the rhythm of your own breath, improving your focus. Moreover, you will learn 7 Pranayama techniques that will help you to lengthen your breath, to increase your lung capacity and to strengthen the nervous system.
  • Kriyas (cleansing,) and Mudras (energy seals): Cleansing will clear the system and allow the breath to flow freely. Therefore, you will learn 6 cleansing techniques on your course. Mudras will allow you to seal energy within the body. Again, tutorials will support the practice of both of these.
  • Anatomy of Alignment Classes: These classes will allow you to gain a deeper insight into the different Yoga postures by looking in detail at the body mechanics of each and every posture. A clear understanding of the Skeletal and Muscular Systems in a posture in terms of its anatomical focus is vital for teaching as well as practicing postures.
  • Teaching Methodology): You will start to teach your peers during the third week of your training. You will instruct each other one to one basis and progress to devising and delivering your own lesson plan. Each week, we will provide tools for you to develop your teaching skills. Facilitating you to build your own yoga class that you will teach during the final week.
Teaching Methodology sessions include: Opening a Class, Sequencing, Instructions, Relaxation Techniques, Corrections as well as Adjustments, Modifications.
  • Hatha Yoga: Hatha simply refers to the practice of physical Yoga postures. Therefore, your Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar and Power Yoga classes are all originated from Hatha Yoga. The word “hatha” can be translated in several ways. One translation says “Hatha” literaly means in Sanskrit “effort”, “force” or “exertion” and has a couple important implications when designating in the physical branch of Yoga. First, “hatha yoga” technically refers to an approach of Yoga which begins with exertion or physical effort. It is also called the Yoga of activity. Traditionally, we would start with conspicuous effort (i.e. the poses), then work toward more subtle practices, (breathwork, muscular and energetic “locks” designed to guide the flow of energy, etc.), before finally moving to the more internal level of meditation. Another meaning derived from the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, originating around 1500 c.e. In this text, Swami Svatmarama outlined the primary practices of the hatha yoga lineage as well as its goal, which according to him is the same as all other branches, and that is the attainment of samadhi or “oneness of mind.” Importantly, this is a point Svatmarama emphasizes throughout the text, asserting that the practices of hatha yoga are meaningless if we are not focused on meditation and its goal. Svatmarama speaks of how the physical practices can also be seen to impact the flow of energy (through Nadis) in the body. In particular, he discusses how they pertain to what some Yogis considered the two primary energy channels of individuals prior to enlightenment. These channels are known as the ida and the pingala, or Sun and moon Nadi and can be compared to the complementary forces that make up life: male and female, generative and receptive, hot and cold, etc.
Svatmarama then goes on to explain that part of what the hatha yogi is doing can be thought of as balancing these two energies – in a sense, he says, uniting the “solar” and the “lunar” elements of the body. This means, Hatha Yoga is the Yoga of balance. Hatha practices are generally designed to keep your body strong, healthy, to align and calm not only your your body, but also your mind and spirit in preparation for the further meditation.
  • Ashtanga Yoga: The historic story of the Ashtanga Yoga system tells about the reconstruction from a mysterious manuscript written on a bundle of palm leaves, the Yoga Korunta. Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga recorded by the sage Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta. This ancient manuscript “said to contain lists of many different groupings of asanas, as well as highly original teachings on vinyasa, drishti, bandhas, mudras, and philosophy” (Jois 2002). The text of the Yoga Korunta “was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900’s by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927” (“Ashtanga Yoga”). Since 1948, Pattabhi Jois has been teaching Ashtanga yoga from his yoga shala, the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (Jois 2002), according to the sacred tradition of Guru Parampara. Ashtanga yoga literally means “eight-limbed yoga,” as outlined by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. According to Patanjali, the path of internal purification for revealing the Universal Self consists of eight spiritual practices.
  • Yoga Philosophy: Classical Yoga Philosophy interwoven throughout the program. Hence, you will get introduced to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and Hathapradipika. Allowing you to make your own comparisons of classical and contemporary Yoga, posing the question, ‘What is Yoga?’. These sessions are a great time for philosophical debate. It indeed provides a welcome insight into the views of your fellow students. Each Yoga class will have an intention with a spiritual message. Especially the relevants of that will allow you to understand how we can incorporate philosophy into practice.
  • Evening Activities: Furthermore, our YTTC lectures includes: Meditation, Japa Meditation, spiritual documentaries, Kirtans and Satsangs

At the end of the month, you will hold an Internationally Certified Yoga Alliance 200hr Teacher Training Certificate. Your rigourous training in sequences and adjustments will inspire you to create your own teaching style. More importantly, your body and mind will have been intensely exercised and expanded. At Shree Hari Yoga School, we aim to bring our students the motivation and tools to continue a life-long yoga practice.
